Stone Steps Beach in Encinitas - Leucadia Mercantile

A California shop and journal. Built for people who take the scenic route..

Where we’re from

Leucadia is a small stretch of the California coast just north of San Diego — the kind of place where the old Highway 101 still runs along the ocean, eucalyptus trees line the road, and the morning walk is treated as non-negotiable.

This shop started here, and it carries that sensibility. Things made well. A pace that doesn’t rush.

The name

Leucadia takes its name from Lefkada — a Greek island in the Ionian Sea whose white limestone cliffs gave it the name leukos: bright, clear, white. When English settlers arrived on this stretch of the California coast in the 1880s, they chose the name deliberately. In Greek, leucadia means a place of refuge — or, depending on the translation, a sheltered paradise.

They gave the streets Greek names too: Vulcan, Neptune, Olympus, Hygeia. The Post Office briefly renamed the town Merle to avoid the long and unfamiliar name. The locals refused to use it. The original name stuck.

A place of refuge on the California coast. It still describes the place accurately. It seemed like the right name for a shop.

What you’ll find here

Original illustrated tees designed in California — each one drawn from the places, animals, and landscapes of the West Coast. Quality leather dog leashes and collars built for daily use. Tote bags, accessories, and goods chosen because they hold up over time.
